Marcel Dzama
Marcel Dzama
1974 -
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Marcel Dzama became known for his distinctive visual language that draws from folk art and art historical and contemporary influences to visualize a world of childhood fantasties and fairy tales, full of humans, animals and hybrid creatures. Dzama, who currently lives and works in New York, rose to prominence in the late 1990s.
In 1997, Dzama received a BFA from the University of Manitoba. In 1996, he co-founded The Royal Art Lodge, a collaborative group of artists based in Winnipeg at the University of Manitoba. They met once a week for several years and worked collaboratively on small-scale drawings and paintings which often incorporated text. The group disbanded in 2008. Dzama cites Marcel Duchamp as one of his greatest inspirations, but he was also influenced by the work of Francisco Goya, William Blake and Francis Picabia, as well as childhood monsters such as Wolfman and Dracula.
In 2004, Dzama moved to New York, and his work, which became more densely populated with figures and animals, began to reflect socio-political commentary. He also began to think of his drawings as still images of stage productions, and worked with dance choreography that organized his figures into stylized formations. He continues to work collaboratively, such as with the New York City Ballet, artist Raymond Pettibon and the actress Amy Sedaris, on drawings, performances and films.
Dzama has shown extensively throughout the United States and abroad. His solo exhibitions at museums include the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich (2008), Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal (major survey show, 2010), Femeentemuseum, The Hague, (2011) and Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland (2014).
Dzama’s work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Metropolitan in New York, the Corcoran Gallery, Washington and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, among others. In 2013, the book Marcel Dzama: Sower of Discord was published, designed in collaboration with the artist.
