Jutai Toonoo
Jutai Toonoo
1959 - 2015
Settlement: Kinngait (Cape Dorset);
Jutai Felix Toonoo, born in 1959 near Cape Dorset (Kinngait) on southern Baffin Island, emerged as a transformative figure in contemporary Inuit art. Growing up in the newly established permanent settlements, Toonoo was influenced early on by his father, Toonoo Toonoo, a skilled hunter and stone sculptor. This early exposure to carving set the stage for his artistic journey.
Toonoo began his professional art career in the late 1990s, distinguishing himself with figurative and semi-abstract stone sculptures that stood apart from traditional Inuit forms. In the early 2000s, he broadened his artistic scope, exploring two-dimensional media and becoming one of the first Cape Dorset artists to work with oil sticks. Over the next decade, Toonoo created a compelling and original body of works on paper, marked by his innovative use of materials and distinct style.
Toonoo’s contributions to Inuit art were profound, characterized by his inventive techniques and bold departure from traditional norms.
In 2013, his works were prominently featured in "Sakahàn," a major exhibition of international Indigenous art at the National Gallery of Canada. Exceptional examples by Toonoo are housed in numerous esteemed collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Canadian Museum of History, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Smithsonian Institution.
