Dorothea Sharp was a prominent British artist of the 19th and early 20th centuries celebrated for her enchanting depictions of children and bucolic countryside. This double sided painting stands out as a charming and emblematic example of her work. One side of the painting portrays children playing happily on the beach, probably in Cornwall, where she kept a studio. Children playing on the beach exude the pure unadulterated joy of youth, and the artist skillfully uses light and colour to infuse the painting with a palpable sense of happiness and freedom. In contrast, the other side depicts a toddler picking flowers in a beautiful meadow by the sea. Here the artist takes us into a world of solitude and introspection. The lush and untamed meadow is rendered in beautiful greens and yellows, and is contrasted by the cerulean blue sea in the background.
It is interesting to note that Dorothea Sharp shared a close friendship with Canadian artist Helen McNicoll. Both artists were drawn to the subject of children and motherhood, they inspired and influenced each other work and they even often modelled for one another.
