On n’a pas cassé trois pattes pour une Oie Blanche is an impressive large-scale example of Jean Paul Riopelle’s celebrated late-career snow goose motif, a theme that became one of the defining subjects of his final decades. Inspired by the annual migration of snow geese through the St. Lawrence River valley, this painting reflects Riopelle’s deep connection to the Canadian landscape and his enduring fascination with nature’s rhythms and cycles. The dynamic composition, rich surface texture, and energetic application of paint demonstrate the artist’s continued experimentation and vitality during a mature phase of his career.

Beyond its visual impact, the work is significant as it embodies Riopelle’s synthesis of abstraction and representation. While the image evokes the movement and collective energy of a flock in flight, it avoids literal depiction, instead focusing on capturing the sensation, memory, and emotional resonance of the natural world. As one of the artist’s most recognizable and sought-after subjects, the snow goose series occupies an important place within Riopelle’s oeuvre, illustrating his ability to transform a uniquely Canadian experience into a powerful and universally engaging artistic statement.

This fall, Riopelle’s achievement is receiving renewed institutional recognition with the inauguration this fall of the Espace Riopelle - Pavillon Michael Audain at the Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec. Dedicated to the artist and his legacy, the new pavilion celebrates the artist’s achievements, and a major survey exhibition will explore the full breadth of Riopelle's career. A circular gallery will be dedicated entirely to his masterpiece from 1991, Tribute to Rosa Luxemburg (L'Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg), a 40 meter long installation of paintings which includes a poetic, atmospheric succession of animal and bird imagery.

As noted in the catalogue raisonee, this work was included on the cover of the 1988 Riopelle exhibition invitation at Gallery Moos in Toronto. The underlying serigraph is dated 1981 and the work is 1985. This work has remained in the same collection since 1988 until its consignment to Heffel this fall.

Heffel is proud to be a presenting partner of the inauguration of the new Espace Riopelle – Michael Audain Pavilion at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, opening its doors on October 22.
