LITERATURE
Yseult Riopelle, Jean Paul Riopelle Catalogue Raisonné, Volume 3, 1960 - 1965, 2009, reproduced page 205, catalogue #1964.013H.1964
This 1964 painting by Jean Paul Riopelle captures the full force of his mature abstract expressionist vocabulary, revealing an artist deeply committed to the physicality of paint and the spontaneity of gesture. During this period, Riopelle relied heavily on the palette knife, building dense, interlocking strokes that create a sense of movement across the entire surface. The resulting composition feels almost sculptural, as if the paint itself were a living material shaped by instinct and momentum. Rather than organizing the canvas around a central motif, Riopelle disperses energy evenly, allowing color, texture, and rhythm to become the true subjects of the work.
This mid 1960s moment also coincides with Riopelle’s growing international prominence. Exhibiting widely across Europe and North America, he was increasingly recognized as one of the leading voices in postwar abstraction, distinct from both American Abstract Expressionism and European Tachisme.
The works of 1964 also mark Riopelle’s heightened engagement with nature as an abstract force. His layered impasto evokes shifting landscapes, fractured light, and the raw vitality of the Canadian wilderness without ever resorting to literal representation. The interplay of dark structural lines with bursts of vivid color suggests both chaos and cohesion, mirroring the unpredictable harmony found in natural environments. Sans titre stands as a testament to his ability to merge improvisation with control, producing a painting that feels at once explosive, deliberate, and unmistakably alive.
Heffel is proud to be a presenting partner of the inauguration of the new Espace Riopelle – Michael Audain Pavilion at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, opening its doors on October 22.
