George Keyt stands as Sri Lanka’s premier modernist painter and a founding force behind the influential Colombo ‘43 Group. Renowned for his sensual figures, Keyt’s visual vocabulary seamlessly bridges Western modern movements - notably Cubism and Fauvism - with traditional South Asian aesthetics, drawing inspiration from classical Indian miniature painting and the serene contours of the region’s Buddhist sculpture. In this compelling pastel drawing, Keyt presents an intimate composition of two lovers locked in an embrace. Defined by strong, expressive contours and a vibrant, harmonious colour palette, the figures are framed by stylized floral motifs and an oval background reminiscent of a sacred Buddhist prabhamandala (halo/mandorla). Keyt elevates the depiction of physical intimacy beyond regional narrative, imbuing the composition with a spiritual resonance and a universal celebration of human connection. Executed with remarkable fluidity, this drawing captures the essence of Keyt’s distinct fusion of sacred iconography and modernist lines. Please note: this work is accompanied by a Letter of Provenance.
