SF64-633, Untitled (No. 86), is one of the original works created as part of the complete Pasadena Box project, executed between 1963 and 1965. Conceived by Sam Francis in collaboration with the Art Alliance of the Pasadena Art Museum, California, the ambitious series comprised 100 signed and numbered acrylic boxes designed specifically to support the museum.
Each box contained an extraordinary suite of works, including eight colour lithographs printed on Rives BFK paper, one colour lithograph printed on Shirikawa rice paper and mounted as a hanging scroll, and three colour lithographs printed on Kochi rice paper and mounted as a folding screen. Completing each set was an original acrylic and/or gouache painting executed on a postcard and framed in Plexiglas, making every Pasadena Box unique.
When the Pasadena Box was released in 1966, the complete edition was offered for sale at $1,900 USD, with proceeds benefiting the Pasadena Art Museum. Over time, many of the original sets were dismantled, with the individual lithographs and unique paintings entering the market separately. The present work is one such example, representing a rare surviving component of this innovative and historically significant project.
