During Emily Carr’s trip to Paris in 1910, she studied at the private studio of Post-Impressionist John Duncan Fergusson, who had a tremendous influence on the artist.
Dr. Kathryn Bridge, in her catalogue Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing, writes, “In Ferguson’s studio, surrounded by his current works on nudes and still lifes, street scenes and landscapes, Carr saw he pushed the edges of contemporary art, using flat planes and vibrant colours, outlines for emphasis, and all stripped down to bare detail. In his studio Carr could speak English, and the air quality was better; as during her earlier trip to London, she found herself aggravated by the smoky big-city air.”
