John Massey
John Massey
1950 -
John Massey is one of Canada’s most inventive multimedia artists. With works displayed in major exhibitions in the United States, France, England, Germany and Australia, Massey has gained a national and international reputation by capturing and transforming the mundane into surreal images.
Born in 1950 in Toronto, Ontario, Massey is the son of Canadian architect Hart Massey, and grandson of Vincent Massey, the first Canadian-born Governor General. After one year studying English and History at Trent University in Peterborough, Massey transferred to the Ontario College of Art – now the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD University). He graduated in 1974 and taught Experimental Arts there from 1981 to 1983. Already an established artist in the early 1980s, Massey works with a wide array of media that range from sculpture to photography, video and installation works, continuously playing with his fascination for the uncanny by altering real-life perception through digital manipulation. His minimalistic aesthetic, which was instilled from an early age by his father’s design of their Ottawa home in the manner of pioneer modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is the hallmark of his hyperrealistic imagery.
Recipient of the 2001 Gershon Iskowitz Prize for lifetime achievement, and winner of four prestigious grants from the Council for the Arts, his pieces have been featured in major galleries and museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Stedeliijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.
