Henry Hunt
Henry Hunt
1923 - 1985
Henry Hunt was a Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) artist born in Prince Rupert in BC. He was the grandson of ethnographer George Hunt and father of artist Tony Hunt. Henry Hunt apprenticed with his well-known father-in-law Mungo Martin, and worked with Martin on a 127' totem pole that was installed in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria in 1956. Hunt began carving at the British Columbia Provincial Museum in 1954, and became chief carver in 1962 after Mungo Martin died. He remained at the museum until 1974, training his sons Tony, Stanley and Richard there. Hunt and his sons carved the splendid Mungo Martin memorial pole at Alert Bay in 1971, and a pole for the Totem Marina at Shuswap Lake in BC. A totem pole carved by Hunt with images of a Bear and a Whale is installed at the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal on Vancouver Island. Hunt's works are also found in international museum collections.
