PROVENANCE
Courtesy of the Artist and Unit 17, Vancouver

This work is edition 1/5.

In the work of Marisa Kriangwiwat Holmes, strange shapes and objects collide in digital collages that form an alliance between both her own photography and images sourced from a myriad of sources, including encyclopedias, old photographs of friends or bands, amateur stock photographs, and used shopping platforms. Runway encompasses the heart of Kriangwiwat Holmes’s practice by beginning with a single image that evokes nostalgia and building on the work using found materials. By purposefully creating work that is in dialogue with—but visually distinct from—that which circulates around us all, Kriangwiwat Holmes asks us to question the way vernacular images pervade our daily lives.

Kriangwiwat Holmes graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She has exhibited at venues such as Artspeak, Vancouver; Unit 17, Vancouver; and The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver, amongst others. Kriangwiwat Holmes is the recipient of the 2022 New Generation Photography Award from the National Gallery of Canada and was the winner of the Second Annual Lind Prize in 2017. In 2022, Capture commissioned Kriangwiwat Holmes to create a series of new collages to debut in its annual catalogue. Kriangwiwat Holmes is based in Vancouver.
