PROVENANCE
Courtesy of the Artist

This work is edition 1/3 + AP.

Rydel Cerezo’s practice investigates the spaces between sexuality, religion, and race to consider how these disparate themes metaphorically and visually coalesce. Aware of the historical ethnographic use of photography as a tool to “capture” particular cultures, he works to reposition this practice by employing the camera to reflect on his own identity, which has been influenced equally by his time in the Philippines and in Canada. Kai In The Backyard is part of the Back of My Hand series, which was created during the first month of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The photograph is of the artist’s brother surrounded by angelic light, and evokes the power of faith, suggesting that hope and solace are still present during precarious times. By turning his lens toward the familiar, the artist rediscovers the intimate hallmarks that reveal who his family is, encouraging us to untangle assumed knowledge, and, as Cerezo notes, observe that which has been “brushed over by the speed of life.”

Cerezo holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver. He has exhibited at Burrard Arts Foundation, Vancouver; The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver; Aperture Foundation’s Summer Open Exhibition, New York; and Vogue Italia’s Photo Vogue Festival, Milan, amongst others. In 2022, Cerezo was included on the Sobey Art Award long list. His work was part of Capture’s 2022 Featured Exhibition, Family Album.
