PROVENANCE
Courtesy of the Artist and Daniel Faria Gallery, Toronto

This work is edition AP 1/2. Please note: each work measures 18 x 18 inches.

Douglas Coupland’s work explores themes of twentieth century pop culture, postmodernity, the human condition, and the technological revolution. His practice celebrates the mass-produced, often deploying readymades displayed with a maximalist approach. The works featured here take inspiration from an earlier series that featured transparencies of paint cans used by celebrated artist and Coupland’s friend Gordon Smith. As Smith painted, the paint cans filled with various vibrant colours as they mixed and flowed into one another, evidencing his use. Here, the medium itself becomes a new painting of sorts, or a scientific study imitating their planetary counterparts.

Coupland’s work has been presented locally and internationally at venues such as Vancouver Art Gallery; West Vancouver Art Museum; Daniel Faria Gallery, Toronto; Jameel Arts Centre, United Arab Emirates; Villa Stuck, Munich; and Witte De With, Netherlands, amongst others. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Order of British Columbia. Coupland lives and works in Vancouver.

Consignor proceeds will benefit Capture Photography Festival.
