At the turn of the nineteenth century, John Hammond was the head of the Fine Arts Department at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, and also served as Administrator of the university's Owens Art Gallery from 1893 to 1916. Hammond lived in Sackville - down the street from well-known artist Alex Colville - and the consignor's father purchased Hammond's house after his death. The sale of the house included this fine painting and also lot 505 in this sale.
