PROVENANCE
Legs Madeleine Poliseno-Pelland Bequest

A symbol of voluptuousness and carnal pleasure, the woman appears in the Pellanian universe until the artist’s last works. Through her, Pellan tackles eroticism, one of Surrealism’s favourite subjects and an essential theme throughout his oeuvre. Alfred Pellan’s female iconographic repertoire is also at times associated with other symbolic dimensions. Woman, thus sublimated, embodies fertility, the cosmos, or regeneration. In certain darker works, the female form becomes instead, an allegory on the passage of time (memento mori). In this way, she is associated with the representation of death, the inescapable destiny of all living beings.
