PROVENANCE
Private Collection, New York

While lacking sufficient provenance to determine with absolute certainty that this work was painted by Emily Carr, it is characteristic of her work from 1906 to 1910, possibly before or shortly after returning to Vancouver from England where in her illustration work profile views of men were predominant. The white highlighting on the cheek bones and other areas is consistent with similar portraits of First Nations people, and was a technique Carr employed because of the inexpensive brown paper she painted with. This sketch is a quick one, with a rapidly painted background to create a sense of space, while the outlined chin, white strokes on the nostrils, top of cheek and chin all have the feeling of being done by Carr’s hand. Furthermore, the signature “M. Carr” is similar to those seen on other watercolours, for example Chinese Boy dated circa 1906 – 1910 and sold by Heffel in Fall 2019.

Please note the condition report for this work.

The framed window mat dimensions of the image are 11 x 7 inches.
