Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, John Lyman, 1886 – 1967, September 26 – November 23, 1986, traveling in 1986 – 1988 to the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Edmonton Art Gallery; Winnipeg Art Gallery; London Regional Art Gallery; Musée du Québec, Quebec City; and Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, catalogue #45

This classic Quebec scene by John Lyman comes with a fascinating provenance and strong exhibition history. The painting was once owned by CBC broadcast journalist and senator, the Honourable Florence Baynard Bird, who was appointed by Lester B. Pearson to chair the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada. The work then passed to her nephew, American publisher and children’s book author John H.W. Rhein III. Most recently, it was owned by illusionist, author, and magic historian David Ben.

Shortly after this painting was produced, it was exhibited in the Art Association of Montreal’s 52nd Spring Exhibition, and fifty years later it would be a part of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre’s major Lyman retrospective marking the artist’s centenary, which toured extensively from 1986 to 1988. Lyman’s important place in Canadian Modernism has been celebrated in many ways over the last century, perhaps most notably in the impressive exhibition “Morrice and Lyman in the Company of Matisse” held at the Musee National des Beaux-arts du Quebec, and at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection beginning in the fall of 2014. Here, Lyman presents us with his characteristic minimal, rounded forms and his typically warm handling of light.
