PROVENANCE
Collection of Margaret "Marnie" Copland (1905 - 1995)
By descent within the family to the present Private Collection, Ontario


Margaret "Marnie" Copland was born in in 1905, in Changde, Hunan Province to a missionary family. She was fluent in Chinese and was immersed in Chinese culture. She married the Canadian Missionary and Presbyterian minister Rev. E. Bruce Copland (1901-1989) and together they lived in China at various times until the end of the Second World War. These paintings were reputedly acquired from a Chinese soldier in 1920 Beijing. Marnie Copland wrote about her experiences in China in her 1980 autobiography 'Moon Cakes and Maple Sugar' .
