LITERATURE
Charles Pachter, interviewed by Heffel, May 2022

Garlic Scapes epitomizes Charles Pachter’s strategy of what he terms “abstraction containment,” whereby, in his own words, “I surround or ‘contain’ a volumetric form, with flat vibrant colour that enhances the painted object.” Pachter represents the central form of the plant stems in two-dimensions, while he depicts the background with a tangible sense of space. Reminiscent of his iconic Pop Art style, each form is characterized by distinct and solid shades of a cool-toned palette. The curly tendrils of the garlic and its flowers, which bloom only when the plant is fully mature, contrast with the rectilinear interior space that they inhabit. In Garlic Scapes, Pachter depicts a form of nature in full bloom, both within a container and within a containment.
