LITERATURE
Charles Pachter, interviewed by Heffel, May 2022

Sweet William, West St., Orillia shows Charles Pachter’s ability to elevate everyday images to dramatic emblems. He perceives his “floral portraits” as a continuation of his earlier flag paintings, here depicting a single Sweet William flower form encapsulated by a field of royal blue.

The flower is rendered with a sense of depth and realism, drawn from Pachter’s observation of a real flower. However, with his subtle gradations of tones and use of dramatic head-on perspective, the image becomes almost abstracted, a geometry of petals floating on a blue field. Pachter grew this flower in his seasonal garden in Orillia, a setting which he terms his “Canadian Giverny” – inspired directly by Claude Monet’s garden and the paintings he produced there.

Watch Charles Pachter discuss this celebratory auction session here.
