Acquired in Hong Kong by a Private Collection, Vancouver, May 1990


Richly patinated and of a dark brown tone, the sceptre carved from the natural section of the bamboo’s root and lower culm, the base with two holes for a tassell and the reverse inscribed with the eleven-character text:

A gift received without reason,

Wealth acquired through subterfuge,

These are the matchmakers (the source) of misfortune.

Consignor proceeds will be donated to benefit the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
