Arthur Heming’s At the Water Hole is a strong example of his work and his close connection to the Canadian wilderness. Known for his depictions of northern life, Heming often painted wildlife in clear, direct ways that reflect careful observation and firsthand experience. In this painting, a group of animals gathers at a water source, each one alert to its surroundings - and each other. Heming’s attention to detail, seen in the terrain, the water, and the animals themselves, helps bring a sense of authenticity to the work. Rather than creating a dramatic or symbolic image, Heming presents a straightforward moment in nature. This approach is typical of his style, which often leans toward narrative and documentation, reflecting an understanding of the rhythms of life in the North and shaped by his travels and experiences. At the Water Hole reflects these qualities beautifully, capturing a moment that feels both immediate and true to life.

Please note: this work is unframed.
