PROVENANCE
Property of a Private Southern Collection
Master Paintings and Drawings, Sotheby's, New York, October 22, 2021, lot 147
An Important Private Collection, Montreal

It should be noted that in their research on the painting, Sotheby's state that it seems probable that the figures in the present panel were painted by Anthonie Palamedesz, a contemporary artist of van Bassen’s with whom he sometimes collaborated. They state: "This work can be closely compared to two other signed examples by van Bassen in which he collaborated with Palamedesz, one fantasy view dated 1639 and one church interior dated 1640. These comparisons seem to suggest a similar date of about 1640 for the present panel, making it a relatively mature work for van Bassen." It should also be noted that the painter Dirk van Delen is also stated as a pupil and frequent collaborator of van Bassen and Palamedesz, which probably explains the metal plaque on the frame.
