Jessica Eaton's series cfaal (Cubes for Albers and LeWitt) is among her most celebrated collection of works. The title derives from the references Eaton was thinking about during her image making: Josef Alber’s explorations of theories of colour, and Sol LeWitt’s modular square formats. The photographs are systematically constructive through an additive process of colour and light. The subject starts as a series of wooden cubes painted in monochromes of white, black, and two shades of grey. An image of these is progressively built up through a series of exposures on a single sheet of 4 x 5 inch film, using hues of red, green, and blue lighting to produce the full spectrum in the final photograph. cfaal (mb-RGB) 18 introduces an additional element, whereby Eaton moves the film to produce a blur of motion. The resulting images somewhat conceal the objecthood of their subject, with the final image often appearing kaleidoscopically abstracted, schematically minimalist, or, as in this case, producing illusionistic optical effects. The photographs are nonetheless photos of objects, dematerialized products of the camera’s technological eye and evocative illustrations of the perceptive possibilities of colour.
