Following his trips to the Canadian Arctic in the late 1930s, Franz Johnston produced a series of works inspired by the northern landscape and its wildlife. This charming tempera on board shows a polar bear in profile, its softly modelled form set against a vivid Arctic backdrop and framed by an ornate painted border. The palette is bright and unrestrained, and the whole composition has a playful, almost whimsical energy that speaks to Johnston’s imaginative take on one of Canada’s most majestic northern animals.
