LITERATURE
Yseult Riopelle, Jean Paul Riopelle Catalogue Raisonné Volume 2, 1954 - 1959, 2004, reproduced page 435 in the addendum to Volume 1, catalogue #1946.061P.V1946
The Riopelle’s abstract watercolours began in the late 1940s, around the time of the Refus global manifesto (1948), and continued into the 1950s. He was working with the figure / ground relationship in works such as this, which, with their use of black lines, related to the experiments of the Surrealists.
The Riopelle Catalogue Raisonné dates this fine watercolour to 1946, and notes the watercolour was originally used as a jacket cover for a book.
