LITERATURE
Fernand Mourlot and Patrick Cramer, Joan Miró, Lithographs, Volume V: 1972-1975, 1992, reproduced pages 120 - 128, catalogue # 1001, 1005, 1006, 1008, 1009, 1013, and 1016

These seven works are from L’enfance d’Ubu, a narrative series of 24 color lithographs. The series is inspired by French playwright Alfred Jarry’s (1873-1907) plays Ubu Roi, Ubu Cocu, and Ubu Enchaîné; a eclectic set of tales whose themes have been connected to the rise of Dada and Surrealism in the 1920s and 1930s. The three plays are stylized burlesques in which Jarry mocks the complacency of the bourgeoisie of late 19th century Paris, France. Drawing from Shakespearean plays such as Macbeth and Hamlet, the story is told through the character Ubu as we follow along his journey from childhood to kingship. The muted hues and playful characters of the Miró’s pieces reference these lewd and childish personas found in Jarry’s plays. The character of Ubu is “notorious for his infantile engagement with the world," and Miró emulates this festive persona in these bewitching illustrations. Miró’s series contains many peculiar creatures, some four-legged and bestial with rainbow whiskers and guarded expressions, alongside others who are stout, playful and jolly.
