EXPOSITION
Galerie Michael Werner, Köln, Ron Martin: Bilder 1971 - 76, July 3 - 31, 1978

In 1973, Ron Martin completed eight Titanium White paintings. Later, it would be realized that these works would fit into a long series of monochrome paintings that he completed in that decade. His various monochrome series were often concerned with the physicality of paint itself, which focused on the possibility of paint to act as both a material and a subject.

Painted after his Bright Red paintings series of 1972, and in the same year that he began his Black paintings, Titanium White #2 retains some of the fluidity and movement found in the red paintings, while simultaneously displaying qualities later developed in the black paintings, such as an increased quantity of paint on the canvas. The titanium white pigment matches the white primed canvas, enticing the viewer to look closely at the texture created on the canvas. The gestural application of the paint fosters an awareness of bodily intervention, while creating a unique experience for the viewer - one where the material’s manipulation becomes the subject of the canvas, and the process that led to the composition's creation can be imagined.

This painting was exhibited at the prestigious Galerie Michael Werner, one of the most important contemporary art dealers in the world.
