Born in Black Lake, Quebec in 1929, Armand Vaillancourt’s artistic career is one of exploration across media. From dynamic painting and sculpture to imaginative monumental public artworks, Vaillancourt’s works are charged with his singular energy and expressive spirit. In “Suzanne,” Vaillancourt adapts this energy to a more intimate scale. Inspired by Vaillancourt’s then-partner and renowned bohemian dancer and choreographer, Suzanne Verdal, the fluid, gestural lines evoke a sense of rhythm reminiscent of a dancer in motion. Verdal was a beloved muse to many and was most famously the namesake of the 1967 song that would launch Leonard Cohen’s career. In Vaillancourt’s “Suzanne,” the stoic wooden pillar and its soft sculptural carvings work together to create a harmonious synthesis between the natural world and the human form, between earth and body, stillness and flux, tranquility and vitality. Throughout his expansive career Vaillancourt has created a magnetic and indelible oeuvre, within which “Suzanne” is a striking and exemplary piece.
