As an artist with interest in and sensitivity to the exploration of Canadiana, Charles Pachter creates with an eye for clarity, boldness and whimsy. Imbued with an element of affectionate satire, his body of work coheres potent symbols of historical identities, including the Canadian flag, barns, Queen Elizabeth and moose. His various media embrace vibrant colours and crisp forms, highlighting his principle of “abstract containment,” by which he “contains” a form with vibrant colour. He skillfully juxtaposes man-made and natural phenomena, manifesting geometric and spatial simplification.

Pachter’s dynamic personality illuminates his artworks. He engages both textual and visual elements to characterize the psyche of the nation that he satirizes, his titles often incorporating wordplay. For Pachter, creation inhabits a perpetual state of becoming, and each of his paintings is an amalgam of his knowledge. Passionate about Canadiana and its authentic representation, Pachter’s work has been termed the “quintessence of Canadian Pop Art.”

Heffel is very pleased to present this collection of Pachter’s works in celebration of the artist’s 80th birthday this year. The selection of paintings, sculpture and works on paper is representative of the breadth of his practice over the last 50 years, from iconic images to experimental compositions, and includes recent new paintings produced during COVID-19 lockdown.

Night Ride depicts a Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) streetcar, a subject that highlights Charles Pachter’s dedication to and love for Toronto. He began his series of collaged silkscreens after teaching at the University of Calgary from 1969 to 1970, when the influence of American Pop artists was at its peak. Pachter incorporates the familiar emblem of Toronto - the ubiquitous streetcar - into a colourful graphic. In 1971, Pachter created several variations of his streetcar images in serigraphs, and in 1972, he exhibited these prints at Toronto’s Isaacs Gallery. Pachter’s love of the TTC and its quintessential imagery would continue for many years, and would culminate in the creation of the mural Hockey Knights in Canada on the platform of College subway station.
