BIBLIOGRAPHIE
Galerie Alan Klinkhoff, John Little – City Life de 1951, 2017
“I loved hockey, but it’s a hard thing to paint except if you isolate a little rink in the back yard. These little homemade rinks made out of old doors for the boards and old signs and stuff, and one little light bulb hung in the back. The big game is more difficult to make it work.” - John Little
Some of John Little’s most lively and charming paintings are scenes of backyard hockey, and this work is a wonderful example. Energetic brushwork surrounds the children in their make-shift rink, making the image vibrate with their excitement. The vitality and nuance of the painterly gesture is perhaps accentuated by the work being executed on the pliant surface of small stretched canvas rather than a stiffer board, which is often the more common choice for artists when painting in this size. Nevertheless, all of his lively application is beautifully contrasted by the subtle minimalism in his ice, snow, and sky. In all, this is a fresh, classic work from one of Montreal’s beloved artists.
