BIBLIOGRAPHIE
Scott Watson, Jack Shadbolt, 1990, pages 192-193
Throughout his career, Jack Shadbolt maintained a fascination with heraldry, flags, and banners - bearers of rich symbolism evoked in the relationships between shape and colour. Produced during a period where Shadbolt was urgently focussing on abstraction, Tapestry is an animated demonstration of Shadbolt’s desire to convey the vital, elemental potentials of non-figurative painting. A broad atmosphere of blue acts as the base to a patchwork motley of reds, yellows, greens, and browns: the structure of the work arises naturally out of the artist's use of shape, colour, and energetic composition. For Shadbolt, the process of painting is something living and organic, whereby the work declares itself through abstracted structure and exuberant colour. "His 'search for form,'" says Scott Watson, "is testimony to his belief that a painting must stand on its own and that abstract visual language has meaning, which, while it can describe, cannot be translated into language."
