Jessie Oonark’s early experiences with sewing caribou skin clothing were foundational to her artistry. From a young age, she learned the precision and patience needed to create functional and durable garments, essential for survival in the Artic. Sewing was a communal activity, and these skills and cultural insights seamlessly transitioned into her textile art, evident in her intricate and symbolic wall hangings.

In this captivating wall hanging, the ulu shape, a symbol of femininity and the role of woman in Inuit culture, emerges from the top and bottom of the central face, which smiles warmly at the viewer. Surrounding this figure, ten additional faces fan out in a circular arrangement, likely symbolizing a drum. The symmetrical and abstract qualities of this piece showcase Oonarks unique style, and her masterful use of bright, contrasting colours infuses the artwork with a vibrant energy.

Jessie Oonark is celebrated for her ability to blend traditional Inuit themes with contemporary artistic expressions. Her innovative approach to textile art makes her a significant figure in Canadian art history and one of the most recognized Inuit artists globally.
