Scherman, currently based in Toronto, received an MA from the Royal College of Art in London. He exhibits in Europe and the United States, as well as in Canada. His work is in numerous major corporate and museum collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Montreal, the Los Angeles County Museum, the High Museum, Atlanta and the San Diego Museum.

Scherman works in encaustic, an ancient technique combining pigments with wax on a heated palette. After initial application to the canvas with brushes and palette knives, the paint is reheated to fuse the paint layers. Subsequently, the surface can be rubbed to a gloss finish. The layering of the paint, its working and reworking lends itself to Scherman’s themes of transformation.

His work often draws on myths and legends - themselves transformations of telling and retelling. This painting, however, is of a more directly personal character. J. (Jack) Creed was Scherman’s grandfather, a well-known Toronto retailer.
