Arthur Lismer’s first visits to Georgian Bay were at the invitation of Dr. James MacCallum, friend and patron of the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson. On those visits he produced works such as Georgian Bay, Near MacCallum's Island, 1916, sold by Heffel in November of 2014. It would be a locale that Lismer and other Group members would return to again and again over their careers, with Lismer especially notable for depicting it in a wide variety of aesthetic approaches, from close-cropped shorelines to dramatic open vistas. Here, he successfully splits the difference between those two approaches. Focusing on the region’s famously rugged geography and climate, he uses coarse brushwork and a subtly moody palette to evoke an extremely authentic sense of place. While the composition is dominated by the foreground and mid-ground forms, he still achieves a effective sense of grandeur in his deft suggestions of the distant far shore.
