LITERATURE
Scott Watson, Jack Shadbolt, 1990, page 107
Press release, New Design Gallery, Vancouver, 1965
In 1965 Shadbolt's memory of a 1961 trip to Greece was triggered by the sight of the monolithic structure of Simon Fraser University close to his home. He stated that “it all came back to me, the space between columns” and began a series of paintings based on a simple structural motif. Watson explains that this series: “combined painterly and geometric elements but added the recognizable iconographic element of Greek columns…the format for these works was the pairing of two column capitals, in which the ‘negative’ space between them became a positive element hugging the picture surface.” The columns are not perfectly symmetrical, the colour not classical. Full of colour and organic irregularity, the rendering of the columns recalls the abstraction of his Mediterranean works, and gives them the feeling of standing figures.
