The celebrated marine archaeologist Dr. Robert Ballard pinpointed the wreck of the Titanic in the depths of the North Atlantic Ocean in 1985, receiving worldwide attention for his discovery. Ken Marschall’s fascination with the Titanic and other famous shipwrecks dates back to the 1960s, when he began to draw and paint images of the ship and to amass an enormous archive relating to the subject. After 1985, Marschall was commissioned to produce illustrations of the discovered wreckage, including one very similar to this lot, which was the cover of TIME magazine on August 11, 1986. Marschall’s illustrated history of the Titanic helped to inspire James Cameron’s 1997 film, with the artist serving as the production’s Visual Historian.
