Bennett’s High Island has been depicted by David Blackwood many times over his illustrious career. Marking the entrance to Wesleyville Harbour, the island’s lighthouse stands on the spot where Captain James Cook placed a marker when charting the coast of Newfoundland in the 1760s. The young Blackwood and his family would have sailed past this point on visits to other locales well documented in the artist’s work, such as Greenspond Island, Deer Island and Bragg’s Island, home to his maternal grandparents. This is an absolutely exceptional example of Blackwood’s work in watercolour, capturing the delicate first moments of dawn at sea.

The original owners of this work were introduced to David Blackwood by Woodrow “Woody” Roberts, also a native of Wesleyville, Newfoundland. Roberts, by all accounts, was a living embodiment of the long and rich tradition of storytelling from that region. This work comes from an impressive private collection of Blackwood’s work that includes the iconic Fire Down on the Labrador, lot 28 in Heffel’s Spring 2024 live auction.
