PROVENANCE
Walter Klinkhoff Gallery, Montreal
Private Estate, Ontario

After serving in World War I, Robert Pilot returned to Montreal to resume his art studies under his father-in-law, Maurice Cullen, and with William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal. While Cullen’s rich impressionist style was a major influence on Pilot, Brymner’s impact is vital to note as well. Encouraging of emerging styles in modernism, Brymner instructed and encouraged essentially all of the most outstanding Montreal painters of this era—a notable number of them women, from Helen McNicoll to Prudence Heward. Brymner’s impact on painting in Quebec in general, and on Pilot’s art in particular, was progressive and essential.

Though just a young man of 21 when he produced this work, Pilot’s voice is remarkably expressive. His robust textures and painterly gestures are present throughout this small pochade, capturing a dazzling yet intimate sense of light. The same year this work was produced, Pilot won the Wood Scholarship through the AAM. He soon returned to Europe, this time to study at the Académie Julien in Paris, further enriching his already remarkable style.
