LITERATURE
Colin S. MacDonald, A Dictionary of Canadian Artists: Volume 3, Ottawa, 1979, page 659

In 1967, a year before Blue Hills was painted, Marie Nagel of Saskatoon's Star Phoenix noted Dorothy Knowles process of painting outdoors: “She says she has beat the problem of mosquitoes flying into her paintings, and dust blowing onto them, by buying a large van from which she often paints ‘I tried to develop my own technique directly from nature,’ said [Knowles], explaining that she tried to integrate her charcoal sketches onto the canvas with the paint, using it very thinly so the charcoal shows through and becomes part of it…”

Blue Hills is a fine example of Knowles' inventive manipulation of media. Using loose, delicate brushwork and subtle variations in tone, the artist creates a dynamic view of southwestern Saskatchewan’s expansive landscape. Wispy rainclouds appear to drift across the canvas, and wind rustles foreground trees and grasses. Highlighting subtle details of interest, Dorothy Knowles expertly captures the nuanced beauty of a prairie landscape.
