Doris McCarthy was an ambitious adventurer. She travelled extensively - documenting and interpreting the landscape with unwavering enthusiasm. McCarthy visited Italy on multiple occasions throughout in her life. In 1962, she lived with an Italian artist friend in Rome for a few months, learning basic Italian and exploring the city and region in her "little Fiat". Executed in 2000, "A Vallery Near Sarteano" is a bold and playful interpretation of the rolling Tuscan hills.
