LITERATURE
Nancy G. Campbell, Shuvinai Ashoona: Life & Work, Art Canada Institute, 2019, https://www.aci-iac.ca/art-books/shuvinai-ashoona/significance-and-critical-issues/#personal-iconography

In her inimitable style, the prolific artist Shuvinai Ashoona here portrays a familiar activity—clam digging. Yet, as in most of in her drawings, she represents more than one reality. Next to the hunched-over figure, who is hard at work and seems deep in concentration, blue worlds of various sizes congregate, as if emanating from the rocky shore. Some of the globes are as small as marbles, others as large as balloons. They surprise and intrigue us, whereas the clam digger seems oblivious to their presence.

Nancy G. Campbell has observed that globes are a frequent element in Ashoona’s drawings. “For a 2012 exhibition at Feheley Fine Arts, entitled Shuvinai’s World(s), she developed an entire series of works that feature the image of the globe: floating globes, people holding globes, even a woman giving birth to globes…” Clam Digging with Earth Transformation, fusing elements of the natural world and a parallel universe, delightfully represents Ashoona’s distinctive and contemporary aesthetic vision.
