LITERATURE
Napatsi Folger, “Tiiturumavit?,” Inuit Art Quarterly, vol. 36, no. 4, Winter 2023, page 16

Napatsi Folger wrote in the Inuit Art Quarterly in 2023, “Annie Pootoogook (1969–2016) is often touted as an icon of contemporary Inuit art, known for her fearless expression of real Inuit life.” The northern life Pootoogook depicted in her frank and precise drawings often centred on the domestic realm—and often included the communal or solitary act of eating.

Untitled (Eating at the Table) is a wonderful example of this theme. The white-walled room appears sparsely furnished, with two figures seated on the floor at a low table. The clock on the wall gives the scene an almost documentary air, along with other closely observed details (a ketchup bottle on the table, electrical outlets next to the baseboard, a small pair of kamiik hanging on the wall). This quiet interior tableau from the artist’s prime Kinngait Studios period generates an atmosphere of warmth and sustenance.
