EXHIBITED
Art Gallery of Ontario, Collins/Pachter/Tinkl, 1976-1977, catalogue #19
Charterhouse, London, Charles Pachter, August - September 2016

Procession Through Landscape is a framed retable of four acrylic on canvas panels, that highlights Charles Pachter’s early style, an important precursor to his iconic Pop Art colour blocking. The painting depicts a disembodied glove inside a limousine, set before a verdant countryside. Pachter’s composition draws upon a fond childhood memory of waiting with his father for the Queen’s royal cavalcade to appear. What he caught from the short glimpse inside the Queen’s limousine was her pristine white glove and royal wave. Although he witnessed the limousine from inside a Toronto streetcar, Pachter set the vehicle in a rural Canadian setting. His summer drive through the St. Lawrence River valley in 1972 inspired the landscape for this painting with its lush grass and sparkling water. This same landscape along the Gaspé coast was also depicted in Pachter’s The Visitation (1972).

Please note: this work consists of four canvases mounted together, each measuring 25 x 21 inches.
