Prior to 1948, Canadian coins featured an inscription surrounding the bust of George VI that read "GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP" ("George VI By the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India"). Following India's independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, adjustments were necessary for the 1948 coins, requiring the removal of "ET IND:IMP" from the legend. As the Royal Canadian Mint awaited the modified matrices and punches from the Royal Mint in London, there was a surge in demand for new coinage. To meet this demand, the RCM produced coins using the 1947 dies, with the addition of a leaf to indicate the incorrect year. Once the modified matrices and punches arrived, 1948-dated coins were minted.
