Takao Tanabe started to make his “banner” works in the 1960s. At the time, he was living in New York City and travelled back and forth to Canada frequently. The banner works became popular, which sparked various commissions, including the City of Vancouver (1963), Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall (1967), University of Alberta (1973), University of Regina (1973) and the Canadian Embassy, Mexico City (1980). This work is from a small edition of 5, and the artist viewed his banners as an extension of his printmaking practice. The banners can be hung from the ceiling and enjoyed from all angles.
