Angelo Dundee trained many boxing champions in his renowned career, but is most recognized for his training of Muhammad Ali from 1960 to 1981. Dundee was imperative to Ali’s success, working as his corner man in all but two of Ali’s fights. The two men had a close relationship, and their careers are permanently linked. Such a partnership is exemplified in this Neil Leifer photograph, Ali Training in Miami, Florida with Angelo Dundee. Ali and Dundee’s relationship was tested when Ali’s boxing license was suspended in 1967. Due to Ali’s opposition to the Vietnam War and his adamant religious beliefs, he refused to be inducted into the US military, and consequently, he was kept out of the ring for almost four years. It wasn’t until October 26, 1970 - less than three weeks after this photograph was taken - and while he was still on appeal, that “The Greatest” defeated Jerry Quarry and began his series of comeback wins, with Dundee in his corner.
The sheet size of the photograph is 16 x 20 inches.
