Works from Andy Warhol’s Flowers (Hand-Colored) have a fascinating place within the artist’s body of work. Throughout the 1960s, Warhol was at the epicentre the Pop Art movement in America, while at the same time creating an important and influential body of work in avant-garde film and producing albums such as The Velvet Underground & Nico. This series from 1974, however, harkens back to the work Warhol did as an emerging New York commercial artist in the late 1950s, the earliest examples of which were signed with his given name, Andy Warhola. Using imagery taken from sources such as the book Interpretive Floral Designs by Mrs. Raymond Russ Stoltz, Warhol produced a series of silkscreens showcasing his distinctive drawn line, delicately hand coloured with watercolour dyes. These works can be seen as intimate, even romantic images within a body of work famous for its objective, monolithic iconography.
