As with many of David Blackwood’s works, this etching speaks intimately to his childhood in Wesleyville, Newfoundland. The figures returning at night are the artist and his family, with Blackwood depicting himself as the child at the bow. They are likely arriving home from a visit with Blackwood’s maternal grandparents on Bragg’s Island, lying nearly 30 kilometers to the southwest by boat. The lighthouse in the background sits atop Bennett’s High Island, which would have guided them safely home to Wesleyville Harbour.
