David Blackwood’s monotypes (or monoprints) are a fascinating part of his print practice. In the midst of building a new studio, without access to his printing press, Blackwood maintained his output by experimenting with monoprinting. The media as applied to the printing plate and transferred to paper results in just one unique printed image, without the necessity of the mechanics of a press. These monotypes allow Blackwood the fluid, gestural qualities and vibrant palette found in his paintings and watercolours, bridging the gap between painting and printwork.
